save the princess! installed at daap

The save the princess! sound project will be installed at UC's College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) Tomorrow, Wednesday, December 1 during the daytime (for critique) and Tuesday, December 7 in the evening around 7 PM (for public exhibition).

There are four locations: one in an elevator and three in different stairwells. In one of the locations, you save the princess.

Special thanks to everyone who listened to pre-clips on my blog and Facebook and gave me feedback. Also thanks to Dustin Boise, fellow art student (sculptor) who suggested I use MP3 players instead of CD players and to install them using industrial-strength velcro.

And thanks to my love for being tall. If you see/hear the exhibition, you will understand.

you've been rejected rebuttal

This is in reference to this post. My favorite part of this rebuttal? "...there are no 'new music' competition judges in the Society of Cool People."

John Mackey, you are awesome. Hopefully I can meet you at The Midwest Clinic this year?

Have a Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

composer FAIL #17

Do you know what's worse than receiving rejection letters? I can handle rejection letters, but receiving a rejection letter in the mail along with the score you submitted kind of hurts. Not only do they think your music sucks, but they are physically handing back the piece they rejected in the first place. This is the piece you spent hours on, not to mention a few overpriced bucks you sacrificed to the cruel corporate entity we composers know as FedEx Office (formally known as FedEx Kinkos, formally known as Kinkos).

Dang. This was my last year to apply.

the noble bocce ball

I finally downloaded the recording for How to be a Deep Thinker in Los Angeles from the Midwest Composers Symposium. (For those of you composers from the visiting schools who still want the recordings, email me and I will upload them via YouSendIt.)

Here's the recording.

Okay, what is wrong with this recording? THERE IS NO BOCCE BALL.

Oh my goodness. I was only able to listen to 3 seconds of this recording. (If you listened to the whole thing, please let me know how it is. I'm sure it's awesome because Tyler rocked the piece, but, alas, I hear no ball rolling.)

This adds to my realization that a few people don't take this bocce ball seriously.

composer FAIL #16

This one is not fake.

14 more to go. (Yikes, I only have 49 days left.)

save the princess! excerpt

I wanted to know how people would react to my sound installation, so I used my students as guinea pigs and played this for them when they walked into their large lecture room on Monday.

Ideally this loop would be installed in an elevator. I couldn't leave much space between the sounds because the average time spent in an elevator is around...45 seconds?

composer FAIL #10 part 2

Here's an update.

Well, thanks for letting me know who won. My friend Hermes Camacho also received the same rejection letter after making the first cut. Dorks.

recording of the silent world

Here is the recording of The Silent World from the Midwest Composers Symposium. This time, I was able to figure out how to incorporate practice mutes and piano mutes WHILE a bloody football game was going on.

Special thanks to Valerie Estes, flute; Lauren Fink, glockenspiel; Martha Mingle, piano; Chia-Hsuan Lin, piano; Stephen Nordstrom, violin; Wooram Kwon, violin; Cara Simpson, viola; Sarah Donahue, cello; and Annunziata Tomoro, conductor.

ballet exam today

Note that I can't draw feet very well (or that some of these words are not infinitives). Wish me luck.

this came in the mail

"Oh my god."
"Is that from the League?"
"It’s from him that’s his seal isn’t it?"

"The Leader! Oh my god."
"I got a letter from Bad Horse."
"That’s so hard core. Bad Horse is legend. He rules the League with an iron hoof."

concert:nova at the cincinnati art museum

If you didn't go to last night's concert, you should check out concert:nova at the Great Hall in the Cincinnati Art Museum tonight. Their playing of baroque works fits perfectly with the space in the museum. (It's a great place to perform.) For more information, check out Mary Ellyn Hutton's preview here. (Hm. If I also attend tonight's concert, would they let me play the harpsichord? Please?)

Also check out their newest promotional video.

Whoa, did my voice change? I sound like my...mother. (Fortunately I don't sound like a disgruntled Korean mother. Or at least I hope not.)

save the princess! sound sources

After attending the nerdiest Halloween party ever, it's time for me to work on my proposed sound installation. (If you thought your Halloween party was nerdy, mine was FAR nerdier. Someone dressed up as Gesualdo's wife; someone else dressed up as Anna Magdalena Bach. One person dressed up as a tonic chord; his date dressed up as a mediant chord, and they were in a "mediant relationship." I attempted to dress up as Björk (it was sort of Kyle's idea), but I had to explain to a couple of people who she is.)

I thought this sound installation would be an excuse to play Super Mario Bros. as much as possible (I downloaded it onto my Wii!), but I sadly don't have the patience or the time to work through this game.
